Keystone Elk Country Alliance

Pennsylvania Elk Country Experience for 4 in Partnership with the Keystone Elk Country Alliance to fund the KECA distance learning program

Hunt Writeup: The Project
Distance Learning is an ACCESSIBLE and FREE way for schools and groups across the country to connect with the Elk Country Visitor Center. The geographic and funding constraints that many schools face often prohibit students from visiting the Elk Country Visitor Center for educational programs. To help counteract these constraints, the Keystone Elk Country Alliance’s (KECA) Conservation Education Department established a Distance Learning program in 2013. This program is LIVE and INTERACTIVE. It uses green screen technology and video conferencing to provide students with a multi-sensory learning experience right in their classroom. Our Distance Learning program meets Pennsylvania State Academic Standards and blends seamlessly into classroom curricula. (the program is 40 min. in length) This program can be adapted for any age and covers elk history, elk ecology, and the current status of the PA elk herd as well as many other things. In addition, our Conservation Education Department ships a trunk that contains a pelt, antler, jaw, skull and hoof of an elk, as well as other animal parts and materials to participating schools. This trunk enables our program to be hands-on even though KECA educators are not physically in the classroom.

The Experience
Pennsylvania Elk-Rut Experience Elk Country Visitor Center – Benezette, PA September 20 - 22, 2023
A truly unique outdoor adventure during the Pennsylvania Elk rut that includes overnight accommodations, a horse-drawn wagon ride through Elk Country and an after-dark experience in some of the most remote country that Pennsylvania has to offer.
Horse-Drawn Wagon Ride An elk country wagon ride is an awesome experience! The wagon will be pulled by our experienced team of Belgium horses across 245-acres of pristine elk habitat, adjacent to the Elk Country Visitor Center. The ride will be guided by one of our staff riding shotgun and will last approximately 45 minutes. Since we’ll be out searching for wild critters, we can’t guarantee wildlife sightings, but it is common to see elk, deer, turkey and other wildlife on these rides. We may even catch a spectacular sunset if the weather is cooperative.
Prior to the ride we’ll be providing light snacks and refreshments, so plan to arrive 60 minutes in advance of the scheduled departure time. Also be sure to bring a camera, binoculars and weather-appropriate attire. After-Dark Experience Elk Country After Dark is an experience like no other and will leave you fully immersed in the magic that happens after the sun sets in Pennsylvania's Elk Country. On a clear night you’ll be amazed by the dark skies of some of Pennsylvania’s most remote country. You may hear the bugles of herd bulls, the mews of a matriarch cow, clashing of antlers as one bull challenges another, along with the sounds of coyotes, owls, and other creatures of the night.
You will be in a sensory overload as you get to experience something like never before... something that very few ever get to experience! The evening will start after your wagon ride with a social event in the EM Jack & Jean Parker Outdoor Classroom behind the Elk Country Visitor Center featuring a grazing table of various meats, cheeses, fruit, vegetables, and dips, as well as beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and deserts. Around 8pm, the program will get started with a short presentation by Elk County Visitor Center staff and they will speak on some of the things to expect while enjoying the evening along with some safety expectations as well. After the presentation, the group will be guided to the trail head areas to then sit back and relax, all while taking in the sounds and the wonder of Elk Country after dark.

Awesome Accommodations - 2 Nights in Elk Country Overnight accommodations will be provided at the Medix Run Lodges and Cabins - Bear Lodge on Wednesday, September 20th and Thursday, September 21st.
